Lucy dog and I headed out for our morning walk…..she on her leash beside me while I am listening to “The Paris Wife”….have the iPhone in my pocket…no ear buds as I want to hear things around me. Lucy and I walked two blocks before Ollie cat joined us….he had much to say along the way. We only walked two more blocks before I felt like we had entered twilight zone with a flashback to Alfred Hitchcock’s movie “The Birds”. There were a few blackbirds sitting on the telephone wires. One of them took a particular interest in Ollie….that darn blackbird kept swooping down and moving from block to block. At one point I picked up the cat. After about 3 more blocks the blackbird stopped trailing us. It’s soon time to turn the corner heading back home…..Lucy digs in her heels and we have to have a moment of chat. Onward…..and then there was the squirrel….more rigid moments in Lucy’s body. Stan cat greets us (now it’s just Lucy and me….Ollie left us a couple blocks before home). Stan is stretching and rolling over on his back as we walk up the driveway. Then he jumps up to kiss Lucy. Stan likes to stay home and “guard” the house.

It’s been a “jungle” kind of morning!

Last Saturday my friend Susanne said, “What’s up with Lucy’s nipples? She looks like she’s having pups!”

Holy Toledo is my first reaction…not possible unless it is a virgin birth. Then I begin to worry…has she been out of my watch? So….I schedule a visit to the vet which was long over due anyway. Lucy had lots of things happen today…she had her nails trimmed (way overdue) and the tech said she wagged her tail the whole time.

Moving on to Lucy’s nipples…vet Beth also thought this was unusual…a quick ultra sound…the tech came back to say 8 and then started laughing when my mouth dropped! Here’s the deal! She is not pregnant…..but not only are her nipples enlarged but there is milk. Lucy’s body thinks she is having pups. I’ve noticed that she has singled out one of the cats for more “affection” …humping. Vet Beth explained it out all to me. Lucy wants to be a mom and Ollie is her “pup”.

One might ask…why is Lucy’s body even thinking about pups. Well..I have delayed the date for spaying for several reasons. Initially it was because  I am of the theory that a dog should go through their first heat. She did….. then I kept prolonging Lucy going under the “knife”. Then it became a matter of weight…she needed to loose a few pounds. We worked on it…she was making progress. Life threw us a loop…family illness…a death (my brother-in-law passed away)…we were all caught up…even though Lucy has a walker a couple times a week it wasn’t enough. Lucy not only didn’t loose weight…she gained.

So where are we here! Lucy must complete her “pseudo” pregnancy, loose weight….and go under the knife!

Random photos and thoughts

So….Ollie is walking all over my desk…what’s the deal? He’s had dinner…where is his brother Stan? Lucy is trying to supervise but the cat is outwitting the dog. There’s a chill in the air and we’re all in tonight. I’m dreaming of knitting, cooking, blogging, reading, and of course chores…what will really get done? Chili is on the stove…one of my comfort foods. The blogging is in process. I’ll knit and I am also eager to dive into some “new” family history information that I received yesterday. Who knew that I had a great (5 x’s) grandfather in the American Revolution. It was in the Miles FamilyHistory  book but I never quite read that far back. My paternal grandmother Alta was a Miles.

Earlier this week I was able to capture the early morning activity around here…..the cats and dog waking to the world!

Last night was amazing in that the sunset was stunning and so many of us were out walking our dogs and children and muttering “Who can believe it’s November?” I had a moment of joy about living in California….remembering why….the beauty of the autumn sunsets. (Be sure to scroll down to see the sunset photos.)

Karen’s Epiphany!

“S…, it’s raining!” And I follow that announcment with, “Yep, it’s not the fog!” Did Lucy and Sopie care? Not one iota!

They had already been bursting with their running and dog hugging up for some 30 mins or so….and they could care less that some rain drops were coming. Sophie is truly a water dog…she manages to take a swim in the Bay water at least once while she is circulating throughout Pt Isabel. Lucy, on the other hand, does not like to run into the water so she will wait atop the ridges, wait for Sophie to return and then tumble upon her as soon as she can get close enough. Sometimes we – Karen, Lucy and I – are moving on to encourage Sophie to follow…and she does eventually.

Lucy actually had a break-through on retrieving this morning….Karen lobs the ball off into the great sky and the dogs retrieve. Lucy loves to get the ball and usually drops it on the way back because she spots Sophie waiting for her return. Today Lucy actually brought the ball back – twice – to Karen’s feet.

Some photos from the last few Pt Isabel visits.

Trying to squeeze a little computer time in here tonight….Lucy is sleeping…and boy I can get a lot done when that pup is down. I need to go into the other room but if I do my computer time is up! She had a great run at Pt Isabel this morning…it was gray and brisk…and she and ran…while I walked along. I was here for part of the morning – a vacation day – and then Bill, his son Rich and I were off to a family memorial service in Rocklin, CA…couple hours from here. Lucy was eager to see me return at 6pm…Stan has been around tonight…and oh where is that rascal Ollie?

Some new photos will be posted soon….yesterday Lucy was 18 months old…the kittens/now cats are 23 mos old…tjhey’ve been with me since they were 2 1/2 mos old….I can hardly believe it! Some days seem to labor on…and then I reflect on where has the time gone.

They are all home….Lucy, Stan and Ollie. Well, Lucy is always home with me but sometimes those boy cats are not sure when they should come home. They do come home every day, but my goodness they can keep irregular night hours. But tonight is perfect…they are all here. Lucy is very busy with frozen bone with beef marrow….until a few minutes ago Ollie was sleeping at my feet…and independent Stan is sleeping elsewhere.

The really big news is that Lucy gets to go to Pt Isabel tomorrow. I am thinking that she and her dog friend Sophie will be over the top with dog glee. Camera will be on hand. I must confess that I am too looking forward to their “dog date”.  I love their dog enthusiam, enjoy the walks with dog friend Karen and am very happy to get Lucy back to her dog world.

The next adventure is for Lucy to become friends with our young neighbor who lives next door. She is 6 yrs old, charming, and eager to be friends with Lucy.  While Lucy is just a loving warm dog, she is showing a little dog grumpy, i.e. barking at anything and all things, since she has been “cabin-bound”. Soon…my young neighbor and I will be walking Lucy together sometimes…they will become great friends…and all will be quieter!

Must end day in  saying….I look at that girl dog and often wonder if I was in my right mind to add more one “thing” to my list….and then I look at her again and I realize it was and is so right!

It wasn’t an earthquake!

…..it was Ollie, the kitten now cat, hitting the child’s gate that I use for a barrier between rooms (this barrier is simply propped and not secured to a wall)….and  OMG it was the middle of the night and I awoke with a start. I no sooner sort that out when the curtains come crashing down…that tension road just couldn’t support the romping of one of the cats…which one I don’t know. It truly felt like a nightmare…but it wasn’t….it was real!

The next morning continued to be a comedy. The cats, Stan and Ollie, are doing a stand-off with each other meaning they were actually having a “meow-out”…a rarity as they are so calm and good buddies. It turns out that the other thing Ollie got involved in was a new bag of yarn that I brought home just the day before. The great news is that the yarn was untouched…but  one of the handles from the bag was missing…I noticed that first thing since the bag of yarn had been deposited at the foot of my bed. It was a few minutes later that I realized why the cats were grumbling. Ollie had the handle of the paper bag around his body. I couldn’t think fast enough to grab the camera…so this is one of those visualize moments.

Ollie and Stan

Be sure to scroll down to the slide show link.

The boy kittens, Stan and Ollie, are just easy going….settled and somehow they have bypassed their “teen years”. They are just plain settled! In  the meantime Lucy is still settling and it could be some years! Ha!

Saturday started with Lucy waking at 4:30 – and that is a.m. –  believing the whole world was on her clock…after about an hour where I was barely responding she began standing up over me in the bed – all 50-60 lbs of her. Now that is not the best way for the dog to be….but I must say when I finally get out of my groggy sleepy state, it is quite comical to see her so full of life and energy…I’ m clearly not yet there but I am trying to jump on board. I crawl out bed about 6, make the coffee….now everyone is excited – the cats, the dog, and almost me!

Pt Isabel Trail

Now we are off to the dog park. We are there just a matter of minutes when I walk on a rock and throw myself to the ground. The good news – no broken bones! Hit both hands and one hip….but only have small bruise on palm of hand. Lucy did the right thing – she stopped and checked back in to make sure I was okay and then she was off on her run.

It’s like the whole dog park is her perosnal trampoline. She runs, she checks in to see if I am following, she flies through the grass….and all of theis reminds me to be more grounded in the things that are important to me…my family, my friends, my pets.

Lucy - the lively girl!

And now a slide show – many more of Lucy the pup only because the boys are harder to capture.
