“Only in Berkeley”

Back to this blog after long absence……

About 2/3 into today’s morning 1-hr walk with Lucy dog, I heard a dog commotion ahead across Key Route. A couple minutes later a woman biker decides to stop abruptly in front of car across the street from where I was walking. She began to tell me about the commotion….dog off leash and owner on cell phone not “reading” her dog. She then points to cell phone (without earbuds) in my hand. Why did I even respond with “I am listening to a book while walking”? She says, “But you aren’t reading your dog then.” I respond, “Of course I am.”

I spent the rest of the walk grumbling to myself (and Lucy who was on leash) that I don’t always have to be nice. Grrrrr!

Thanks to Jan for suggesting we take a walk at Pt Isabel yesterday afternoon…..as it turned out Jan decided not to go…..but what a great time was had by Lucy. She was leash free and romping through the wet field….including the puddles. She had a great exercise day….a 30-min walk in the morning and 30 minutes at the dog park. It was a restful night for all!

Our Morning Walk

Lucy was ready to go this morning….there was a second or two where she marched around trying to herd me and I swear….she has a look just like my mom’s. My sister Betty and her children know that look…it’s the “once up and down” and then some. Lucy cracks me up when she is ready….she sees me change shoes and jacket and she becomes a herder.

Today it wasn’t the neighborhood squirrels and cats that “spooked” her….it was the Halloween decorations. She did a double take when she saw the RIP yard….and then the barking began.

Love the autumn morning crisp air.

A night at home…

Time to share the love of this pet household….settling in for the evening…spent some time on the kitchen floor watching Lucy dog and the brother cats – Stan and Ollie – settle for the evening. Here is what it looked like tonight. (Stan has white on his paws…thus Ollie is the one with out white.)

Lucy dog and I headed out for our morning walk…..she on her leash beside me while I am listening to “The Paris Wife”….have the iPhone in my pocket…no ear buds as I want to hear things around me. Lucy and I walked two blocks before Ollie cat joined us….he had much to say along the way. We only walked two more blocks before I felt like we had entered twilight zone with a flashback to Alfred Hitchcock’s movie “The Birds”. There were a few blackbirds sitting on the telephone wires. One of them took a particular interest in Ollie….that darn blackbird kept swooping down and moving from block to block. At one point I picked up the cat. After about 3 more blocks the blackbird stopped trailing us. It’s soon time to turn the corner heading back home…..Lucy digs in her heels and we have to have a moment of chat. Onward…..and then there was the squirrel….more rigid moments in Lucy’s body. Stan cat greets us (now it’s just Lucy and me….Ollie left us a couple blocks before home). Stan is stretching and rolling over on his back as we walk up the driveway. Then he jumps up to kiss Lucy. Stan likes to stay home and “guard” the house.

It’s been a “jungle” kind of morning!

Last Saturday my friend Susanne said, “What’s up with Lucy’s nipples? She looks like she’s having pups!”

Holy Toledo is my first reaction…not possible unless it is a virgin birth. Then I begin to worry…has she been out of my watch? So….I schedule a visit to the vet which was long over due anyway. Lucy had lots of things happen today…she had her nails trimmed (way overdue) and the tech said she wagged her tail the whole time.

Moving on to Lucy’s nipples…vet Beth also thought this was unusual…a quick ultra sound…the tech came back to say 8 and then started laughing when my mouth dropped! Here’s the deal! She is not pregnant…..but not only are her nipples enlarged but there is milk. Lucy’s body thinks she is having pups. I’ve noticed that she has singled out one of the cats for more “affection” …humping. Vet Beth explained it out all to me. Lucy wants to be a mom and Ollie is her “pup”.

One might ask…why is Lucy’s body even thinking about pups. Well..I have delayed the date for spaying for several reasons. Initially it was because  I am of the theory that a dog should go through their first heat. She did….. then I kept prolonging Lucy going under the “knife”. Then it became a matter of weight…she needed to loose a few pounds. We worked on it…she was making progress. Life threw us a loop…family illness…a death (my brother-in-law passed away)…we were all caught up…even though Lucy has a walker a couple times a week it wasn’t enough. Lucy not only didn’t loose weight…she gained.

So where are we here! Lucy must complete her “pseudo” pregnancy, loose weight….and go under the knife!

When the down pour of rain eased from “buckets” to strong rain I thought the girl and I better brave it! I bundled up my with long rain coat under biking yellow rain poncho topped off with my Australian outback hat and hands covered in blue fleece mittens. What a sight to see! We walked for 30 mins or so….my jeans were soaked in many spots and so were my running shoes (like I run anymore but I do walk). My hat, poncho and mittens worked….the only parts of me that weren’t soaked through. But the joy now is that my jeans are in the dryer and Lucy is happy to be napping.

With the encouragement and recommendation of my friend Kimberly, I’ve engaged Family Pet Care to help my kelpie/lab mix Lucy get more exercise. For the last month I’ve been walking this herding girl dog every morning as well I’ve been taking her back to Pt Isabel for some very early morning runs…but she still needs more run and dog pack time.

Even though Jen of Family Pet Care and I met a week before and I had the utmost confidence in her abilities, I was never-the-less a “nervous Nelly” about Lucy going off to be a pack of four…she had met one of the pack a week before. So….why was I nervous? Lucy is both a sweet-natured gentle dog as well as opinionated and strong-willed. She often doesn’t like a dog getting in her space and yet she can play really hard with other dogs. She often “herds” me and she is not shy about sharing her dog opinions. At the end of the day she is the kind of dog you want guarding you, your home and sleeping at your feet.

Let me tell you….Jen was great with Lucy! She and the pack of four were gone from my home for two hours. I was like a nervous mom with the first-born going to school or camp for the first time. I loved the quiet space and got so much done….and yet kept wondering how they were doing.

The report from Jen about Lucy is that she did fine in the pack and on a scale of 1 to 10, she came in at 7…..meaning that her dog behavior was good and she has room for improvement!

Thank you to Kimberly for recommending Jen! If any of you are in need of “dog whisper” kind of help, contact me and I will put you in touch with Family PetCare.
